Angry LadyIt seems like a bad April Fool’s joke, but Louise Chavez isn’t laughing. After her penny slot machine indicated that she had won a $42 million jackpot, officials at Colorado’s Fortune Valley Casino informed her that the message she received was faulty.

Stating that the machine was programmed to only award a top jackpot prize of $250 000, the officials believe that a software malfunction was the cause of the misunderstanding. Chavez’s original bet ($23) was returned to her, and she was given a free hotel room and breakfast by the casino. Fortune Valley has also stated that they would look into the issue to determine exactly what went wrong.

Since the debacle took place on April 1st, Chavez has made several television appearances. She claims that the casino is cheating her out of her rightful prize and believes that if the machine said she won $42 million then that is what she be awarded.

Although she has made no mention of taking legal action, it would be a wise course of action, as casino operators in similar situations have paid large settlements to avoid bad press. Legal proceedings would be a bumpy road, however, as Fortune Valley’s parent company recently put the casino up for sale.
