Canadian provinces are finding themselves in the spotlight after Quebec announced that they would be offering online gambling through the provincial lottery. As with many political decisions, the announcement was met with both enthusiasm and scorn.
Those in favour of online gambling argue that adults should be able to make their own decisions about how they spend their money. Many also say that if some people are unable to control themselves, they should stay away from gambling altogether; the same way alcoholics and drug addicts must do to avoid their bad habits.
Those opposed to online gambling argue that any gambling addict who was doing well and staying away from casinos would have to face a whole new set of demons since online gambling is available at anytime. They are asking for video lottery terminals to have stronger warnings and with bigger, more noticeable fonts.
Provinces and states that legalize online gambling are rewarded to the tune of billions of dollars. The online casino industry is massive and expands a little more every day. Some say that governments are looking at revenue instead of at the effects on people but leaders argue that the income has gone to improving healthcare and other services.
It appears as though online gambling is coming one way or another and while it likely can be stopped, there is hope that gambling addicts will be able to receive the help they need, when they need it.
