New Jersey’s governor is finding it difficult to keep his campaign promises. He recently proposed serious spending cuts in order to keep New Jersey away from bankruptcy. The budget he presented was just under $30 billion, very modest as far as state budgets go.
One of the most popular ideas that the governor had was to give homeowners a property tax rebate. Unfortunately, he had to postpone the promise he made until 2011 which has left some people angry that he went back on his word. The proposal also includes laying off more than 1000 state workers and cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from the public school budget. His reasons for doing all of this are reasonable but that won’t stop people from questioning his actions.
There is one other option that he may not have considered and that is regulated online gambling. It is no secret that the industry is worth billions of dollars and countries that have already legalized it are reaping in the rewards.
A new law has been proposed that will allow land-based casinos in Atlantic City to offer online versions of their casino games. If this law were to be passed, it would go a long way in providing relief to both Atlantic City and the state of New Jersey. There are several other states considering making the bold move but no one has progressed anywhere past discussions among government leaders. While online gambling is illegal in the US, the market for online gambling is astounding.
