People in India have been gambling for hundreds of years and now investors and government officials are beginning to understand the size of the industry. It is estimated that online gambling in India is worth around $5 billion.

In fact, the major Indian cities host more than 2000 small poker tournaments every week. Players come from all over the world to participate in the larger, well-known tournaments with close to 100 of India’s residents competing in each one.

Although the game has been around for hundreds of years, it is only recently that younger Indian men have shown an interest. As technology advances, more and more people in India are joining the online world. Approximately 81 million people currently use the internet in India, with greatest number of users in the male 18-35 age group. More specifically, almost 90 percent of internet users in India are male.

India is, however, trying to associate with legal internet practice as opposed to illegal things like sports betting which has a reputation for being fixed. Once online gambling is fully regulated in the country, the industry is expected to grow significantly more.

As soon as online gambling is regulated, operators will be running over each other to market to the country since their population is so astronomical. For operators in Canada and the rest of the world, the opportunity for growth is vast.
